Remy Coddington is relishing the chance to make his senior international debut after being called up by Bermuda for the upcoming Concacaf Nations League fixtures.

The right-sided forward is in line to gain his first full international cap after being included in new head coach Michael Findlay’s first squad for the games against French Guiana at Flora Duffy Stadium today, and an away fixture against St Vincent & the Grenadines on Tuesday.

After previously being part of senior team training camps without making the final squad, the 19-year-old is desperate to finally make his mark on the international stage.

“I’m really proud to be here as part of this full senior squad,” said Coddington, who this summer brought to an end three years with English Premier League side West Ham United’s under-21 set-up, having been signed from Bournemouth in July 2020.

“This feels like a long time coming for me. I’ve worked really hard to get to this point and now I’m just really excited.

“I really enjoyed being a part of the training squad that went out to Florida in 2021, but now hopefully I can get my full debut and make everyone proud.

“There would be nothing better for me than to be able to play for my country, at home, in front of all my family and friends. I’m not sure anything could top that.”

Coddington is one of five new faces along with Jalen Commissiong, Aunde Todd, Ne-Jai Tucker and Kashe Hall in the squad that mixes youth and experience with emerging young talent such as Harry Twite, Deniche Hill and Jai Bean featuring alongside more familiar faces such as Danté Levereock, Reggie Lambe, Zeiko Lewis, Dale Eve and Liam Evans.

While acknowledging the importance of the presence of senior players, Coddington is well aware that he has an opportunity to stake his claim for a place.

“There are still some senior players involved, which I think every team needs, but it’s also nice to see some fresh faces among the national team,” he said. “For the young players, it’s great to be given an opportunity to gain this experience.

“When the new coach came in, he preached about this being a clean slate and opportunity for everyone to impress, and I feel that’s really exciting.”

Despite his inexperience at international level, Coddington is adamant that his time spent overseas, particularly with West Ham, where he proudly followed in the footsteps of compatriot Clyde Best, has left him more than equipped to make an impression.

“Being at West Ham was a great platform for me to learn,” he said. “I learnt something new every day and I believe I got a lot better in my time there.

“Also, just to be at the same club that Clyde Best played for was nothing short of amazing. I wouldn’t change it for the world.

“If I do get a chance to play some part in the matches, people can hopefully expect to see me get on the ball, dribble a lot and I also feel like I have goals in my game, so hopefully I get that chance to impress.”

Having had one final chance to cast his eye over his squad during a training session at Flora Duffy Stadium on Thursday night, Findlay concedes he has some selection headaches as he looks forward to starting his tenure in front of a passionate home crowd.

“The nice thing is we have a number of fresh faces and, with me also being new, it has been a case of coming into this with my eyes wide open,” said Findlay, who replaced Kyle Lightbourne last month.

“Certainly it won’t be an easy selection for the starting eleven and nor would I want it to be.

“Perhaps at times in the past there may have been a case of who else is there to pick type of outlook, but that is definitely not the case now, particularly with the injection of youth.

“That hopefully will push the more senior players to realise that maybe they are not guaranteed a place because there is healthy competition.

“I’m really excited about the match now. When you come into a new position, there is nothing better than starting out at home, so I’m hopeful that we can make all of Bermuda proud.

“It will be a challenge against what is a strong French Guiana team, but we need to be able to strive for better, not just for now but to be successful moving into next year.”
