Kenny Thompson expecting tough test from Somerset in semi-final clash

North Village coach Kenny Thompson is looking forward to a fiercely fought battle when his side take on defending champions Somerset Trojans in the semi-finals of the Dudley Eve Trophy at PHC Field tonight.

Village and Trojans will be the first of the semi-finalists to take to the field before Devonshire Cougars face Hamilton Parish, with the two victorious sides set to meet in the final on November 11.

Thompson’s team head into the match fired up by their 2-1 triumph over the Cougars last Friday, a win which saw them maintain their perfect start to the season, while the Trojans are low on morale after they were beaten 3-0 at home by PHC on Sunday.

While they are yet to win a league match so far, the Trojans have proven to be dangerous in their Dudley Eve title defence. In the quarter-finals, Jensen Rogers’s side came from behind to defeat PHC 2-1.

“It’s a semi-final between two of Bermuda’s most successful clubs so we’re anticipating a competitive game,’’ Thompson said.

“We have almost a full squad available. London Steede is recovering from injury and won’t make this game.

“Ian Simmons is also serving a one-match suspension after the red card on Friday, otherwise we are at full strength.

“Playing on Friday night enabled the team to recover over the weekend and hold a training session on Monday.”

Rogers is not concerned by his team’s league troubles, with his focus on getting a result that can take them to the final.

“We’re up against probably the best team in the league,’’ Rogers said. “We’re the defending champions but this is a new season, different opponent.

“We’re just going to prepare like we prepare for any other game. We have no wins, but right now it’s just about finding some consistency in the team.

“We’re not focused too much on that we haven't won a game; if we can just keep improving the performances, we’ll come right.

“It’s a cup game so it doesn't have to be pretty, it's about getting a result in these kind of matches.

“We’re not focused on what happened last week, what matters for us is can we get across the line? Can we get to the final?”

“Throughout the season, we've had to change the team each week, if we have to change the week again, that’s what we have to do.

“We have to see which players are available for selection.”

Sergio Goater, the Parish coach, sees tonight’s encounter as a great opportunity to breathe some life into their season.

His side has found the going tough in the Premier Division, where they are yet to win any of the three matches they have played.

Losing semi-finalists last season, Parish has the chance to go one better this time round.

On Sunday, Parish came close to recording their first win of the season, only for St George’s to find a late equaliser in a match that ended 2-2.

Macquille Walker scored both goals for Parish and he again carries their hopes of a spot in the final.

“It’s a chance for us to reach a final,’’ Goater said.

“Also something to kick-start our season. As far as injuries are concerned, everyone who we had fit from Sunday is still fit and available, and of course we've got a lot of key players out injured.”

For the Cougars, the beaten finalists last season, the match presents them with an opportunity to make a quick return to winning ways, after they suffered their first league defeat of the season against Village.
