Many would know of the exploits of Delray Rawlins on the cricket pitch with bat or ball in hand, however few would likely be aware of the talent the Bermuda captain possesses when in possession of a football.

Last weekend, Rawlins showed that he is no “one-trick pony”, as he impressed after coming on as a second-half substitute for Paget Lions against X-Roads, assisting one goal and thundering a right-foot volley in the back of the net to close out a 4-0 triumph for his new team.

Rawlins told how it felt good to play and positively contribute to Lions’ third straight league triumph, with football coming as a means of staying fit during cricket’s off-season.

“I was out there having a bit of fun,” said Rawlins, who displayed intricate close ball control, along with an aerial threat during the course of the proceedings. “It was a nice win, we’re at the top of the table, so that’s all that matters.”

Asked if he thought he would have such an impact on the scoreline as he did, Rawlins noted that he was simply following coach’s orders.

“I just came on and tried to do what the coach asked me to do and things worked out as they did,” added Rawlins. “It’s been a little while since I played, probably a few years, but it’s nice to be able to come out and contribute.

“Playing provides a fitness element, as well as it being something fun to do. I’m able to play with a couple of my boys, so yeah, I’m having fun.”

One very much aware of Rawlins’s talent is Paget coach Antwan Russell, who was not at all surprised by the impact made by the player upon the match, emphasising that his use was based purely on merit.

“His performance was expected,” said Russell. “I’ve watched Delray for a long time, from a kid playing ball.

“People may think that it was a publicity stunt, but Delray is a quality player, as you saw in the 15 to 20 minutes he played.

“Obviously, he’s Bermuda’s cricket captain, so he’s a thinker, because to play cricket you have to think. And that’s what he brings to the table and can show these guys, the thinking part of the game.

“Players can run around and be in shape, but can you think in critical moments and make the right decisions.

“I’m not out to just give anybody a show or give away spots for charity, you have to earn your place. Next week, if he trains, he may get some more minutes.”
