Bermuda’s middle distance king Aaron Evans has targeted a place in the 800 metre finals of the NCAA Indoor Championships this weekend.Evans will be representing the University of Georgia (UGA) at the prestigious track and field meet which is being held at College Station at Texas A&M University. It will be Evans’ debut appearance at the finals, and while he admits he prefers the outdoor competition he still feels confident of posting a quick time.“This is my first time going to NCAA indoor nationals. In 2009 in missed going by one spot,” said the 21-year-old, who won a silver medal at the outdoor NCAA’s last season.“I want to go to the nationals and make the finals. Indoors has never been my thing but I’m strong and feeling good right now so anything can happen.”Earlier this month, Evans jumped off his sick bed to break the Bulldogs’ indoor record, held by Bermuda’s Steve Burgess, with a time of one minute 48.07 seconds at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Washington. Evans, who had spent the last fortnight in bed with flu, now holds both the indoor and outdoor records at UGA.Back in May, he broke the university’s 800m outdoor record, clocking in at 1:47.00, shattering the previous record of 1:47:64 which was a 25-year-old national record also set by Evans’ mentor Burgess. This weekend Evans hopes to break his own university record in the indoor 800m.“I’m having a great indoor season and I’ll be more than happy if this weekend I can go to nationals and make finals, hopefully breaking the record again.”Also competing in the NCAA Indoor Championships will be Evans’ compatriot and Bulldogs team-mate Latroya Darrell.Darrell placed second in the triple jump at a university track and field meet last weekend to qualify for the championships.Evans added: “I’ll be cheering on Latroya. We both should be able to do big things this weekend and come out with new personal bests.”Last season saw London Olympic hopeful Evans win a silver medal at the NACAC Under-23 Championships and compete for Bermuda at the CAC Games in Puerto Rico where he cam fourth.
