Duffy’s terrifying trip into unknown
Bermuda triathlete Flora Duffy will take a “terrifying” step into the unknown when she competes in her first World Cup Championship –Series race in Madrid this weekend.Joining Duffy on Sunday’s start line will be some of the best triathletes in the world including last year’s champion Nicola Spirig, reigning Olympic champion Emma Snowsill and current ITU World Champion Emma Moffatt. As it’s Duffy’s maiden race at this level, she has set herself no specific targets but is hoping for a solid performance in the picturesque Casa de Campo Park in central Madrid the second race of the seven event series.“It’s a very strong field which is terrifying and exciting at the same time,” said Duffy, who won a silver medal at last summer’s CAC Games.“This is the first World Championship Series race that I have ever done so I don’t really have any specific aims in terms of where I –finish overall. I would like to swim front pack, push the pace on the bike and hopefully have a strong run. If I do all of that I will be happy with my race. We’ll see on Sunday.”Duffy warmed up for this weekend’s race by making her non-drafting (no pack riding permitted) debut in the Capital of Texas Triathlon Championships, in Austin, on Monday. She finished seventh with a time of two hours, six minutes and 14 seconds. The 21-year-old clocked 18:05 in the swim that saw her exit the water in fifth, she then recorded a time of 1:06.37 on the bike course, before completing the run in 38:40.Considering it was her first non-drafting race, she said she was thrilled with her display: “I’m happy with finishing seventh. It was my first non-drafting race so I was on my time trial bike, which makes the race a lot different!“It’s a very different style of racing, but something I’m looking at doing more in the future.“I had a great swim coming out of the water with the leaders, struggled a little on the bike, and then had a solid run.“It was quite hot so I’m glad to have had a strong race in the heat.”Earlier this season, Duffy claimed a victory at the Mazatlan ITU Triathlon in Mexico.
