70-year-old Zanol prepares to tackle Everest

Bermuda runners Giorgio and Marco Zanol are today just below the Everest base camp as they prepare to tackle a marathon on the slopes of the world’s highest mountain.Tomorrow is the big day for the Island duo, who have sofar raised $17,000 for charity with their latest running adventure.And for supermarket boss Giorgio it will be a chance to make history as the oldest competitor to complete the gruelling 26.2-mile race.At 70, he is five years over the normal upper limit allowed for athletes taking part in the event. However, Giorgio has passed stringent medical tests to prove he is up to the challenge of running a race in near freezing conditions and with a start line three miles above sea level.The Lindo’s Group boss is no stranger to mountain running, and over the years has competed in trans-Alpine events in Europe, as has son Marco.The pair are raising funds for the Bermuda Diabetes Association and a children’s hospital in Nepal. They have spent the past two weeks getting acclimatised to the high altitude in preparation for tomorrow’s race.
