Marshall ready for Kenyan experience
Lamont Marshall has accepted an invitation to broaden his athletic horizons on the African continent.Earlier this month the middle distance runner received an invite to travel to Kenya to train with some of the region’s elite runners from past World Marathon Champion Douglas Wakiihuri.“If he is willing to come down to Kenya I would offer all the assistance he will need,” Wakiihuri told The Royal Gazette in a recent interview. “I can get him accommodation, hook him up with the best coaches in Kenya, show him around and get him to meet some of the best runners in Kenya and also train with him a bit.”If all goes according to plan, Marshall intends to travel to Kenya with Wakiihuri early next year in the hope of taking his game to the next level.“Hopefully this time next year if he comes back for race weekend (Bermuda Marathon Weekend) I will travel back to Kenya with him,” the Bermudian said. “That way I can really get to know him on the long trip to Africa.”Marshall said it has always been a desire of his to travel to Africa.“I have always wanted to go to Africa just to learn more about the culture and to train over there would be a great experience,” he said. “I am definitely looking forward to going to Kenya and very much thrilled. Hopefully I can go for eight to ten weeks.”Marshall, who set a new personal best (31:33) on the way to securing runner up accolades in last weekend’s Bermuda Marathon Weekend 10K, is currently preparing for two 3,000 meter indoor races at Boston University next month. He also hopes to qualify for this year’s Olympics in the UK, a feat Wakiihuri believes the Bermudian is more than capable of.“He has no choice because he has the talent and if he is going to finish his career without being an Olympian then that is going to go down in history in a different manner,” he said.Wakiihuri said Marshall’s technique and form can only gain from exposure to the high level of competition that abundantly exists in Kenya.“If he can mix up with some Kenyan runners he can get the feel and know exactly where he is because Kenyan runners are the best,” he added. “I know that when he trains in Kenya he is definitely going to come back with a better understanding, better strength and speed and better ways of probably attacking the races.”As well as being a past World Marathon Champion and Olympic silver medallist, Wakiihuri has also won the London and New York Marathons and is someone Marshall is inspired by.“He is definitely an inspiration and to be honest the first time I read about Douglas Wakiihuri was in a book (Train Hard Win Easy the Kenyan Way),” he said. “He is such a very enthusiastic and inspiring individual both on and off the track.“Just talking with him he gets it into your mind that anything is possible when you put in the hard work and training, and I believe him.”
