The chase is on for Estwanik and fellow 'bulls'

Chris Estwanik

Top runner Chris Estwanik will lead the charge when the Validus Re Running of the Bulls 5K race takes place on Sunday.Inspired by the annual festival held in Pamplona, Spain, which involves running in front of a small group of stampeding bulls, the event will challenge its participants to outrun several of the Island’s elite runners. The male ‘bulls’ will be Estwanik, Sean Trott, Chayce Smith and Stephen Allen, while the female group include Ashley Estwanik, Joanna Shillington, Victoria Fiddick and Kristyn Robinson. It’s hoped Jennifer Alen will join the female contingent. The ‘bulls’, who will wear extravagant costumes, will have a delayed start before trying to catch the rest of the runners ahead of the finish line.Estwanik, an employee at Validus Re, said both he and his wife, Ashley, had competed in a Running of the Bulls race in the US some years ago.“Ashley and I had been part of a similar event in California which went over really well in the community that we lived in,” he said.“So when my colleagues at Validus were looking to put on a race we brainstormed this idea. Bermuda has a lot of great races but this will be something unique and a different way to get people out for a Sunday run.“We’re looking for the ‘bulls’ to run in two groups: male and female. We’re still working out on how much of a delayed start we’ll get; I imagine we’ll catch some people but not all of them.”Estwanik added that he hoped the race could become an annual fixture in the Island’s road race programme.“The race directors, Candice Roach and Karen Peckett, have done a fantastic job getting this thing together,” he said. “They have taken the idea, built upon it, and have some great ideas on how it can be expanded in the future. I think the hope is for it to become even bigger next year.”Participants have the option of choosing the 5K run or walk. There will be prizes awarded to the best runner or competitive walker in their age bracket and t-shirts for the first 200 runners who pick up their race numbers. The Mid Atlantic Athletic Club registration fee is $27 for MAAC members, $32 for non-members and reduced rates for MAAC Gold members and recreational walkers. The race will raise money for youth mentoring programme Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bermuda.
