Beautiful scenes keep drawing him back

Ramsay Merriss

Ramsay Merriss isn’t aiming to be the quickest this Saturday — but he’s well ahead of the pack when it comes to longevity.Merriss, 64, from Connecticut, is taking part in his 34th Bermuda race weekend as he maintains an almost ever-present record since his first appearance in the 1970s.He’s been a permanent fixture in the 10K since 1990, and was a marathon runner before that, lured back year after year by the Island’s relatively quiet roads and picturesque scenes.“I have been running all my life and Bermuda is a very beautiful place,” said Merriss.“It’s a good break in January, and gives me a chance to see a lot of my friends.”Merriss said he enjoys the large number of runners in Bermuda, and described the quality of the scenery as the icing on the cake.“I used to race a lot and used to be a lot better runner than I am now,” he said. “Now I run more for the enjoyment.“The race is a decent size, competitive but not overwhelming. It’s not running on dead flat ground, but it’s not through a big city. It’s picturesque.”Merriss has clocked up more than 400 miles in race weekends over the years, and has no plans to give up any time soon.“They gave me an award after number 30. Now I’m aiming to make 40, so after this I have six more to go.”
