Trott and Scotland win 20th anniversary Ed Sherlock road race

Legendary May 24 Half-Marathon six-time champion Ed Sherlock, centre, congratulates Sean Trott and Kimiko Scotland who were the respective men's and women's winners in the 20th anniversary Ed Sherlock Five Mile Road Race yesterday.

Sean Trott made an impressive return to road running action to win the 20th annual Ed Sherlock Five-Mile Road Race.An injury curtailed Trott’s racing ambitions during the past two months, however he demonstrated he was coming back to his best as he won yesterday’s event in Southampton. In the women’s race Kimiko Scotland showed a clean pair of heels to her rivals to take the open women's crown.A clash with the second annual Running of the Bulls 5K in Hamilton appeared to have reduced the number of competitors for the race, which honours Southampton running legend Ed Sherlock. The 81-year-old, who won the May 24 Half Marathon six times between the mid-1950s and the early 1960s, awarded trophies and medals to the overall race champions and age division winners.Trott used the race as a relatively low-key return to the fray having recovered from a tight iliotibial band injury in his left leg. He is also in the final year of a bachelor's degree course in business management and has been concentrating on his studies, another reason he has not been racing of late. The five miler started in raining conditions, which briefly worsened as competitors ran past Warwick Camp and up Camp Hill. There was a headwind to contend with along Middle Road, although the wind became an assist for most of the final two miles of the route after the turn onto South Road at Barnes Corner. In the opening two miles Trott and talented teenager Juma Mouchette led the way.“In the windy conditions I ran as hard as I could,” said Trott. “Juma was right with me for the first two miles. After that I pushed off. It was a good feeling to be racing again and not to have too much pressure as the other guys were racing in town.”Trott’s winning time was 27 minutes 45 seconds, with Mouchette next home in 29.20 ahead of Omari Hart in 30.51.In the women’s race Kimiko Scotland was on her own and won in a time of 38.16 ahead of top senior masters Zina Jones and Carol Griffith. Scotland found the conditions challenging, and afterwards said it was disappointing the 5K race in Hamilton had clashed with the event, but she wanted to compete in the Ed Sherlock race to show support for “a living legend”.That sentiment was shared by many, including well-known road runner Cal Steede who expressed thanks to the organisers Swans Running Club for staging the race. Quinton Sherlock Jr, nephew of running legend Sherlock, also thanked those who came along to participate despite there being another race option available.A special plaque was presented to Ed Sherlock to honour the 20th anniversary of the race. Sherlock, who will be 82 in November, still trains twice a week on the beach near his home and said it was his ambition to run the May 24 half-marathon again. Sherlock first won the Island’s signature road race in 1956. He went on to win a record-setting five consecutive titles between 1958 and 1962, an achievement since matched but not yet surpassed by the great Kavin Smith and current champ Chris Estwanik .Speaking of his hope to run May 24 again, Sherlock said: “When I get my body in shape I can run the whole way. That’s what I want to do.” He was also happy to see the race bearing his name continuing after 20 years and said he would put his new plaque in his “hall of fame” at home, alongside his many running trophies.Christine Joell, one of the race organisers, was pleased with how things went. “Despite the smaller number of competitors this year we were satisfied and we had our regular supporters. People were disappointed about the clash of the races, it was unfortunate. But we are thankful for the support we did get, and despite the rain and wind everyone had a good run.”In the five-mile walk, held in conjunction with the race, first home was Shinah Simons in 61 minutes, ahead of Gilda Cann and Quinton Sherlock Sr.In a shorter distance junior race, Kiandra Burgess took first place in 20.44. A total of 43 competitors completed the combined road race and walk.Age group winners:Women: (Open) Kimiko Scotland 38.16; (40-49) Rochelle Ford 54.36; (50-59) Zina Jones 39.31.Men: (16-19) Juma Mouchette 29.20; (Open) Sean Trott 27.45; (40-49) Leon Bascome 34.22; (50-59) Dennis Wainwright (35.52); (60+) Eddie Fisher 41.08.Full results:1.
