Swan’s Running Club has donated funds given to them as a peace offering to charity.The club presented $500 dollars to St John’s Ambulance Brigade during last weekend’s Ludwig Cann 5K.The money had originally been donated to Swan’s Running Club by organisers of the Validus Re Running of the Bulls 5K in an effort to smoothen relations between both parties which soured because of a scheduling clash.This year’s Validus Re Running of the Bulls 5K was held on the same day as the Ed Sherlock 5 Mile Road Race, even though the day of the race (February 17) had been originally set aside for the latter fundraising event honouring the past multiple May 24 champ’s legacy.It is alleged that organisers of the Running of the Bulls ignored Bermuda National Athletics Association requests to reschedule their event to avoid the scheduling conflict, going as far as threatening to “cancel” it if they did were unable to get the preferred date.Following a public outcry from members of the local road running community over the clash, Validus Re apologised for the conflict and donated $500 dollars to Swan’s Running Club as compensation for loss of revenue due to the conflict.But the local running club has since seen fit to put the money to other use.“The members of Swan’s Running Club have agreed that the funds should be donated to the St John’s Ambulance Brigade to assist in continuing the good work they do for Bermuda,” said Swan’s Running Club secretary Christine Joell. “The funds were donated to our club by Validus Reinsurance Company Ltd. A race organised by Swan’s Running Club (Ed Sherlock 5 Mile Road Race) and another race (Running of the Bulls) sponsored by Validus Reinsurance Company Ltd were held on the same date, resulting in loss of revenue to our club.”Garaeth Adderley accepted the donation from Swan’s Running Club on behalf of St John’s Ambulance Brigade.In the future Validus Re Vice President Jerome Dill said his organisation will do their best to avoid a repeat of this year’s scheduling conflict that marred the 20th anniversary of the Ed Sherlock 5 Mile Road Race.“We will try and set a date for next year which does not conflict with this particular event,” he said. “We are also prepared to work with the executive of this group to ensure that we don’t in any way, shape or form conflict.“We recognise the contribution to running in Bermuda made by this gentleman (Sherlock) and the last thing we want to do is to in any way, shape or form detract from the very good reputation that he has.”
