Phillips loses boys’ final but wins mixed doubles

Daniel Phillips

Promising tennis player Daniel Phillips was defeated by his German doubles partner in the final of the Little Mo International tournament yesterday.

Bermuda’s Phillips, the No?1 seed in the boys’ under-eight green dot division, went down 6-3, 6-0 to Moritz Kudernatsch at the IMG Academy in Florida.

Phillips and Kudernatsch were beaten 8-6 in the quarter-finals of the boys’ doubles by the Guatemalan pair of Rafael Botran and Javier Gutierrez.

In the mixed doubles, Phillips and Valerija Kargina, of Latvia, triumphed 8-1 over Jakie Kennedy, of the United States, and Sofia Panizza, of Uruguay. The Little Mo International tournament attracted 259 players from 40 countries.

In April, it will be held in Bermuda for the first time at Coral Beach, Elbow Beach, Pomander Gate, WER Joell Tennis Stadium and Tucker’s Point.

It is expected to attract more than 150 players, including 20 to 30 Bermudians.

The event is named after Maureen Connolly, the first woman to capture the grand slam of tennis in a calendar year — Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open.

She remains the only American and youngest player to achieve the feat.
