Bermuda in medal hunt at Caribbean juniors

Patrick Foster, the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association director, said he is thrilled with the performances of Bermuda’s players at the Junior Caribbean Championships in Guyana.

Three players on the nine-member squad have reached their age-group semi-finals, including Hailey Moss, who is representing the island for the first time. Moss reached the last four in the under-13 girls division where she will face Guyana’s Kirsten Gomes.

“For Hailey to make top four in her age group on her first trip is pretty special,” Foster said.

En route to the semis, Moss defeated Guyana’s Haley Carpenter 11-5, 11-4, 11-5.

Also through to the semis are Taylor Carrick and Charlie Riker. Carrick will meet Khamal Cumberbatch, of the United States, in the under-17 boys while Riker will face Trinidad’s Christopher Anthony in the under-15 boys.

“They were fairly confident in the build-up that they would be looking for semi-finals at least,” Foster said. “They are up against tough competition, but they are tough boys.”

Riker reached the last four at the expense of team-mate Matthew Elliott who he beat 11-3, 11-4, 11-4 in the quarter-finals.

“It’s always tough when Bermudians face Bermudians in the early final stages, but it is what it is,” Foster said.

Like Riker, Carrick had a bye in the round of 16 before beating Barbados’ Kemar Lord 11-6, 11-8, 11-4 in the quarters.

Both Carrick and Riker are bidding to improve on their third-place showings at last year’s event in the Cayman Islands.

Another local bowing out in the quarter-finals was Anaya Smith, who lost against Guyana’s Daniel Islam 11-5, 11-8, 11-2 in the under-17 boys age bracket. Elliott, Smith and Andrew Cox are now competing in the consolation play-offs.

“I have my fingers crossed for those that are still in that we can just get something to go our way,” Foster said.

“I have only had limited access to chat to Micah [Bermuda coach Micah Franklin]. But as far as I can gather from him and the parents, everyone has been performing well and certainly leaving it all out on the court.”

Bermuda’s team has four players representing the island for first time in Cox, Daniel Ringer, Graham and Hailey Moss.

“The young players down there are really as fresh as you can get into this type of event and have done really well,” Foster added.

Bermuda hope to put an end to a four-year drought at this event. The last time they won silverware at the championships was in 2012 in Jamaica, when Dylan Pratt and Noah Browne won boys age-group honours as the island captured the boys team title.
