Tyler Smith produced the performance of a lifetime to finish eleventh out of 75 at the World Triathlon Series Grand Final in Rotterdam today.

Smith completed the Junior Men’s course in 57min 18sec, only 84 seconds behind the winner, Matthew Hauser, of Australia.

On a cold and wet morning in the Netherlands, Smith stayed among the leaders after a strong swim.

He was eleventh out of the water in 9:06, ten seconds behind the leaders and then clocked the fastest bike of the race to get into the lead pack.

Smith’s 29:26 and second transition left him in the top seven, but he was overtaken by the faster runners to place outside the top ten.

Nevertheless, he was said to be happy with his time of 16:38 over the 5km run, which left him 43 seconds off the top three.

Vasco Vilaca, of Portugal, was second in 56:22 and Britain’s Ben Dijkstra third in 56:35.
