Duffy joins basketball star James as monthly award winner

Month to remember: Bermuda's Flora Duffy on her way to victory in MS Amlin World Triathlon Bermuda

Flora Duffy’s sporting profile continues to soar after joining basketball star LeBron James as the United States Sports Academy’s Male and Female Athletes of the Month for April.

Duffy dominated women’s triathlon last month — as she has for the past 18 months — claiming Bermuda’s second Commonwealth gold and first of any colour by a woman on the Gold Coast, Australia, before returning home to storm to a memorable triumph in WTS Bermuda.

The 30-year-old has carried her superb form into this month, powering her way to victory in the World Triathlon Yokohama last Friday to move to the top of the ITU WTS overall standings.

She has won every race she has completed in the past 18 months other than the World Triathlon Montreal last August when she was beaten by Australia’s Ashleigh Gentle.

Duffy is expected to return to action in the AJ Bell World Triathlon Leeds on June 10.

James, one the biggest names in world sport, led Cleveland Cavaliers in all five major statistical categories in their NBA play-off series win against the Indiana Pacers last month.

He averaged 41.8 points in the Cavaliers’ four wins against the Pacers and finished the series averaging 34.4 points, 10.1 rebounds, 7.7 assists, 1.4 steals and 1 block per game.

The power forward shot 55.3 per cent from the field and 35.3 per cent from three-point range.

The second best finisher on the men’s side was Japanese runner Yuki Kawauchi and third place went to American golfer Patrick Reed.

The runner-up on the women’s side was United States runner Desiree Linden, while third place went to basketball player Arike Ogunbowale, of Notre Dame, who play in the NCAA Division 1.

Each month, the public is invited to participate in the Academy’s worldwide Athlete of the Month programme by nominating athletes and then voting online during the first week of every month. The online votes are used to guide the Academy selection committee in choosing the male and female monthly winners, who then become eligible for selection to the prestigious Athlete of the Year ballot.

A worldwide public vote on the annual ballot is used to guide the committee in making the final selection.

The Athlete of the Year Award is part of the United States Sports Academy’s Awards of Sport programme.
