The Zooma Women’s Race Series is coming to Bermuda next weekend when the island hosts a 1.5-mile race from Gibbs Hill Lighthouse to Horseshoe Bay on Saturday and then two more races on Sunday, a 10K and a half marathon. The races are the first in this year’s series, which also includes races in Texas in March, Falmouth, Massachusetts in September, Amelia Island, Florida in October and Texas in November. A number of female participants from overseas will compete with local runners. “On Saturday, there is the run from the lighthouse to Horseshoe Bay starting at 4.30pm which they are calling the Lighthouse Run,” Anthony Raynor, who is assisting with the organising of the races, said.“The idea is that the visitors to the island, many of them, are staying at Fairmont Southampton so they’ll be able to walk across to the lighthouse and enjoy that before the run. Then they’ll go down to the beach; it’ll be evening time and hopefully the weather will be cooperative and that they can enjoy that experience just before sunset.”The runners will have a choice of doing either the 10K or the half marathon on the Sunday morning, making it a challenge event for the two days. “I’m sure people will enjoy it,” Raynor added. “I do know there are people who are staying beyond the weekend, so this is what the economy needs. If the weather continues like this, it will be brilliant.”“We look at this as people coming to run, but they also have excursions planned each day, one day Dockyard and the next day the East End. And they are doing it as a group, which is a nice feature of this whole experience.”
