Three silver medals for Bermuda in junior squash championships

Bermuda’s team members lost in three finals in the Caribbean Junior Squash Championships in Georgetown, Guyana, as the team won three silver medals and had four other players reach semi-finals.

Mason Smith finished second in the boys under-11 round robin, winning three of his four matches, including beating Ben Phang, of Guyana, 11-4, 11-7, 11-2 in his last match.

Owen Rosorea lost to Jayden George of St Vincent and the Grenadines 11-5, 11-4, 11-4 in the boys under-13 final.

Somers Stevenson also missed out on the gold in the girls under-15 final after she lost to Jamaica’s Mehar Trehan 11-4, 11-2, 11-1.

Four Bermuda players also lost in third-place play-off matches. McKenna Kyme went down in a close contest to Tiana Gomes, of Guyana. Gomes won the first game 11-6 before Kyme won the next two games 11-8, 11-6 to lead 2-1. However, Gomes turned it back in her favour by winning the last two games 11-9, 11-6 to seal the victory.

Rose Paulos, of Bermuda, went down 11-2, 11-7, 11-7 to Safirah Sumner, of Guyana, in the girls under-15 third-place play-off, as did Eli Carpol in the boys under-15 and Matthew Elliott in the boys under-19.

Carpol went down 11-7, 11-7, 11-8 to Daniel Henderson, of British Virgin Islands, and Elliott lost to Samuel Ince, of Guyana, 11-3, 11-2, 11-2.

The team events started last evening with Jamaica beating Bermuda 4-1 in the girls event where Kyme won Bermuda’s only match by default, while the boys team went down 3-2 to Cayman Islands. Carpol (under-15) and Owen Rosorea (under-13) got Bermuda’s two wins in the close loss.
