Masters team head for World Champs

Bermuda will be represented at next month’s 14th FINA World Masters Swimming Championships in Riccione, Italy.Flying the Island’s banner in the event, to be held from June 3-17, will be the foursome of Annette Budge, Christiane Wehmeyer, Colleen Nelson and Sandra Dallas.Budge is competing in the womens 40-44 100 metres freestyle, 100 metres breaststroke, 200 metres freestyle, 200 metres individual medley, 400 metres freestyle as well as the 3K open water swim.Wehmeyer will also be kept busy, competing in the womens 45-49 100 and 200 metres backstroke, 200 metres freestyle, 200 metres individual medley and the 50 metres butterfly.Nelson will carry the Island’s medal hopes in the women’s 60-64 50 and 100 metres breaststroke, 50 and 100 metres freestyle, 50 metres butterfly and 3K open water swim.Dallas is hoping to make her mark in the women’s 70-74 50 and 100 metres backstroke and 50 and 100 metre breaststroke.The four swimmers will team up to compete in the women’s 4 x 50 metres freestyle relay and 4 x 50 metres medley relay.There will be qualifying times for all events which will vary depending on the age group category in order to limit the number of swimmers participating.Budge, Wehmeyer and Nelson all competed at the previous FINA World Masters Championships in Sweden two years ago while making their debut this year is senior team member Dallas.“This will be the first time for Sandra,” Nelson said. “Sandra only began regular swim training just over two years ago and now is one of the most committed participants at the Masters swimming programme at Sandys 360.“We are all very excited about this competition and going to Italy. It is an opportunity to compete at the highest level of Masters swimming, spend some time in a different country and also to make new friends.“The team is also very grateful for the financial support of Validus Re who has sponsored the team’s uniforms.”The FINA World Masters Championships are held every two years with the next event to be held in Montreal in 2014.“We hope that due to the proximity and the fact that the event will be held in the middle of the summer more of the Bermuda masters will be able to participate,” Nelson added.Bermuda Masters swimmers first appeared as a team at the 2010 championships held in Gothenburg, Sweden where seven swimmers competed in both pool and open water swimming events.
