Teagan Mewett wins third medal on final day of Carifta Games
Teagan Mewett ensured that Bermuda would be represented on the podium on the final night of the Carifta Aquatics Championships in Martinique.
Mewett finished third in a thrilling girls 15-17 100 metres breaststroke, touching the wall in 1min 16.35sec behind Ellie Shaw, of Antigua & Barbuda and Jade Bering, the local favourite, to pick up her third medal at the event.
National coach Ben Smith was forced to battle to ensure the teenager was awarded third after the scoreboard erroneously showed Mewett as fourth despite her touching the wall in a clear third place.
After collecting her third medal of the Games and proudly displaying the Bermuda flag on the podium, Mewett revealed her emotions.
“Honestly, winning a third medal is more than I could have ever hoped for,” Mewett said.
“I’m having such a good time with my team-mates and being able to represent Bermuda at this level is so special to me.
“I feel overwhelmed when I am on the podium. Getting to hold the flag up there is a feeling I can’t describe.”
Mewett is the daughter of Bermuda swimmer Geri, who competed at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, and she seems intent on making a splash of her own.
“It feels so incredible to be following in my dad’s footsteps. I feel like I’m making him proud and hopefully making Bermuda proud.”
Mewett was part of Bermuda’s gold medal-winning medley relay team and also won bronze in the 200 metres breaststroke.
