Swimmers Elijah and Elan Daley are delighted after becoming the latest brother and sister to secure the qualification standard for the Commonwealth Games.

The siblings hit the qualifying times at the June Performance Meet in Canada over the weekend, with the duo set to join Emma and Jack Harvey in Glasgow, Scotland.

“I was really excited because I’ve been trying to get this time for a while,” Elijah told The Royal Gazette.

“I actually qualified in my last race of the meet, so it was really exciting for me. To get it and see my hard work pay off like that was great and I’m excited to represent Bermuda internationally on a high stage.

“Representing Bermuda is an honour for me and going with my sister makes it even more awesome. I’m really excited that I get to experience it with her.”

Elan, 21, has achieved the qualification after recovering from shoulder surgery. Before heading to Canada, she had already met the qualifying time for the 100 freestyle.

“I made the 50 freestyle this past weekend, which was awesome,” the University of Tennessee student said.

“Especially coming off an injury because I actually had two surgeries on my shoulder. This is my first summer back competing in long course in four years and I was really happy with how this past weekend went for me.

“We grew up with Emma and Jack, so I’m really excited about it and I know my brother’s really excited about it as well. It’s going to be a really cool experience to have two sets of siblings. They’re amazing swimmers, so it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

After securing qualification, Elijah will get to swim in his favourite distances in Glasgow.

“I’m swimming in a number of events out there,” he said.

“Essentially, if you qualify you get to swim in your best events, so I’ll be doing the 200 individual medley, the 50 butterfly, 100 butterfly and the 200 butterfly.”

Not only did the 20-year-old book his ticket to Scotland, he also set a Bermuda record in the 200 metres individual medley. His time of 2min 6.68sec beat the previous mark of 2:07.25, set by Stephen Fahy at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg in 1999 and equalled by Sam Williamson in Edinburgh in 2024.

“It was really exciting for me to beat that record,” he said. “I know that it stood for like such a long time and it was really exciting for me.

“I’m just going to continue with the training process and continue putting in the work. I trust that my programme I’ve been training with the entire year will keep me going.”

Veronica Gordon, the mother of the swimmers, shared her joy after witnessing them secure qualification.

“I’m delighted and really happy for these two to be realising their own dreams and accomplishing things that they set out to do for themselves,” Gordon said.

“They are extraordinary human beings and they continue to do amazing things.

“The Harveys have been very much in our family’s lives for many years. Our children grew up together. My eldest son, Ethan, who used to swim, is the same age as Emma, so we’ve probably known them for about 16 or 17 years.

“It’s quite amazing for both sets of children to be able to go on this journey together. I think it’s great for them individually, collectively and for Bermuda.”

The mother has been a pillar of strength for the two athletes with her presence whenever they take part in big meets.

“When I left Canada and went to Bermuda, that was my commitment to Elijah, that I would come to all of his meets,” she said.

“The beginning of this season was a little bit difficult for me, so I wasn’t able to do that, but right now, I guess the last couple of meets, I was able to support my daughter and Elijah. I’m pretty committed to them, as they are committed to themselves.”
