Swimmer Emma Harvey missed qualifying for the 100 metres butterfly final at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday evening.

She finished seventh in her semi-final, in 1min 0.90sec, the thirteenth fastest.

However, it was a welcome return to action for Harvey, who was forced to withdraw from the 100 metres backstroke through sickness on Saturday.

On Sunday morning she competed in the third of four 100 fly heats, finishing fourth in a time of 1min 0.65sec behind heat winner Erin Gallagher, from South Africa, but Harvey’s time was enough to qualify eleventh fastest to book her place in the semi-finals.

“It was a good morning swim and it was controlled,” Harvey said, after the heats.

“I was definitely nervous, but I went out pretty comfortable and stayed in my lane. I feel ready for tonight.”

The timing of Harvey’s illness was unfortunate but she is keen to finish the Games on a high.

“These things happen,” she said. “It's a good learning lesson because going into travel and stuff, there's definitely things I would’ve done differently. I would've taken more precautions. As you can hear it in my voice, I’m still a little congested and I’m just trying to do as best I can.

“I was definitely gutted. Don't get me wrong. I was very sad and it was really hard to watch the event yesterday and the semis last night. But there's at least two more races, hopefully four more races, for me.”

Although she did not make it into the 100m fly final, she will compete in the 50 metres backstroke on Monday.

After her 100m fly heat, she said: “I'm just going to try to rest up, keep the past [illness] in the past and focus on tonight and tomorrow.

“Some things you learn as you get older is that over the course of the meet, you can't let the first or second day dictate how the rest of the meet is going to go. I set really high goals for myself at this meet and there's still no reason why I can't achieve them, so I just have to keep telling myself that.”

Earlier in the morning Elan Daley stormed to first place in her heat of the women’s 100 metres freestyle, but missed out on a semi-final slot despite posting a time of 56.66sec.

She took part in heat two of nine and was 4.62sec ahead of the next finisher, Kennice Greene of Vincent and the Grenadines. Daley was the twentieth fastest swimmer out of 64 at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre in Glasgow.

The fastest in the heats was Australia’s Meg Harris, who won gold in the 4x100m freestyle at the 2020 and 2024 Olympics. Her time was 53.91.

Daley said her race was “not great”.

“It was quite a bit off my best, but it is the fastest I’ve been since I got surgery, so I'll take it and I did my best,” she said.

The 21-year-old also competed in the 100 metres butterfly but was disqualified for an alternating leg kick violation.

She had finished first in her heat, posting a time of 1:02.56, which would have been enough to reach the semis before she was disqualified.

Learning about her disqualification as she left the poolside, she said: “It wasn't a great race anyways, but it’s frustrating. It is what it is.”

Daley leaves Scotland tomorrow for the CAC Games.

Of the Commonwealth Games, she said: “It's been great. It's been a really cool experience. I'm grateful.”
