Emma Harvey ends Commonwealth Games with third semi-final
Swimmer Emma Harvey competed in the 50 metres backstroke semi-final to wrap up her Commonwealth Games this evening.
Harvey, who has been battling the effects of illness, was seventh in her semi, in 29.13sec. That was faster than her time in the heats earlier in the day, but not enough to progress to the final.
She was fourteenth fastest in the semis. The quickest was Games record holder Kylie Masse, of Canada, in 27.57
It was Harvey’s third semi-final of the Games. She also made the semis of the 50m and 100m butterfly, on Friday and Sunday respectively, but withdrew from Saturday’s 100m backstroke heats due to illness.
She was still feeling the effects of that illness. After her morning heat she said: “I was feeling a little bit better [on Sunday] and kind of hoping that I'd keep getting healthier,” she said. “But yesterday was definitely tough. Dealing with sickness and stuff has been really tough. Obviously this is not the meet that I'd hoped for.”
Having fulfilled her races at Glasgow’s Tollcross International Swimming Centre, Harvey now has a few weeks to rebuild her strength before competing in the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in California next month.
“Hopefully I'll be healthy by then, fully recovered,” she said this morning.
