Swimmers brave challenging conditions Round The Sound
Almost 450 swimmers braved challenging conditions during the annual Round the Sound Swim on Sunday.
Harrington Sound was abuzz with activity as local and overseas swimmers competed over various distances in choppy seas that made their task all the more daunting.
While prizes were awarded to the top male and female in each race, the biggest winner on the day was the Bermuda Aquarium Museum and Zoo, which was the beneficiary of the nearly $60,000 raised in the fundraising swim this year.
“Fundraising on this has been amazing and big thanks to the Trott family for doing what they did in honour of their dad,” BAMZ principal curator Ian Walker told The Royal Gazette.
“It’s wonderful this event is hosted here. It really is a great opportunity for us to showcase the Aquarium and our backyard in Harrington Sound, and we just love having all these amazing swimmers here doing what they do the best and getting them out and having a nice time as well.
“It really helps us out with our junior volunteer programme, our education programmes and we’ve got our 100th anniversary coming up, so our master plan as well. The money is all going to good places and changing the lives of young people, which is awesome.”
This year’s event featured a large contingent of swimmers from the United States, among them husband and wife duo Derek Cox and Lauren Peterson who claimed men’s and women’s honours in the 10K swim.
“Coming here and swimming in such a beautiful event is always a draw,” Cox said.
“It was great and is always an honour to be among tough competition and such a well organised event.”
Peterson was also delighted to come away victorious among the women’s field in the gruelling conditions.
“It was a tough day; a lot of waves and very choppy out there, but it was a really good time,” she said.
“I didn’t see Derek for any of it unfortunately but I’m glad I got to see him at the end, so it was a good race and very fun.”
National champion Craig Munden and fellow Bermuda swimmer Stephen Kenny finished second and third overall.
“It was a really good performance out there,” Munden said.
“Derek was very fast and I stuck with him for the first 6K and felt really good in the water, and then he really started to push on down the back half. That’s when it started to get a bit choppier and made it quite tough.”
Bermuda’s Nina Coetzer and Eileen Mullowney finished second and third to round off the women’s podium in the 10K swim.
Local swimmers swept the podium in the 6K race, with Ethan Smith first across the line followed by Jasper Lau and Noah Fulton in second and third.
American Molly Melcher claimed women’s honours in the 6K race, with Bermuda’s Lila Connolly taking second and Christy Donley, also of the US, third.
Bermuda swimmers swept the men’s and women’s podium in the 4K race, with Logan Jones leading the field across the line followed by Gianluca Bortoli in second and Katherine Wheddon, who also claimed women’s honours, in third. Lynsey Palmer and Colette Durkin finished second and third to complete Bermuda’s sweep in the women’s field.
American swimmers swept the podium in the 2K race, with Will Keating taking first, Jack Keating second and Natalie Ranta, who topped the women’s podium, third. Bermuda’s Isla Cooze finished second and American Ayla Martocci third among the women’s field.
American Feroz Dewan won the 0.8K swim, with Bermuda’s Lorcan McGlynn and Maxwell Williams taking second and third.
American Kristen Finnegan topped the women’s field followed by Bermuda’s Brooklyn Myers and Isla Smith in second and third.
Round the Sound Swim co-director Nick Strong summed up the event as a resounding success.
“It’s been a very successful event considering the change of course at the last minute yesterday based on the adverse forecast that we faced,” he said.
“We got everyone out of the water who got in. Some pulled out because of conditions but the majority finished and seemed to enjoy it. The conditions made it tough going but it was good.
“We had 434 swimmers of which 170-plus where from overseas and those people all brought someone with them, so there were more than 350 people on island visiting for the event.”
