Will Tweet for work

With the shaky economy, job seekers are becoming increasingly creative in their search. Here in Bermuda, an innovative approach was taken by Laureen Bassett who took to the streets with a one-woman campaign to let potential employers know that she would make a resourceful addition to their team.If standing on East Broadway is not really your thing, you might be more interested in a tech-savvy way of approaching potential employers that allows you to promote yourself from the comfort of your home computer, tablet, or mobile phone. Sending out a Twitter resume, or “twesume”, as coined by Mashable, is a creative method of turning social networking into social get-working. If you do not have a Twitter account, you will need to set one up first. Include a professional-looking photo of yourself and a short bio that relates to your experience. It would be a good idea to gain some followers and to follow some other accounts before launching your Twitter resume so that your resume has the potential to be seen by more people. The Twitter resume aims to condense your actual resume into 140 characters or less. You might be thinking: how in the world do I fit years of education and experience into 140 characters? The answer is to put only the most salient points in the body of the tweet. This will include what you do, your most relevant skills, the type of employment you are seeking, and a link to your full resume or another site, like LinkedIn, where employers can find out about all the other glorious details that did not make it into those 140 characters.Still not fitting in 140 characters or less? You can shorten the link using a service like bit.ly or goo.gl. It is also important to include a location hash tag, like #Bermuda, so your tweet will be seen by employers in the relevant area. You may also want to include a hash tag to clearly state that you are seeking employment; some ones to consider are #hireme, #twesume, #resume, and #needajob.Obviously, once you have created your Twitter resume and asked all your followers to retweet it to their followers, potential employers may actually click on your profile and view your Twitter page. Think about what you do and do not want potential employers to see. You do want them to see tweets that display your knowledge of the industry, that show off your winning personality, and that make you look like you could be an integral part of their organisation. Go through your profile before engaging in sending out your Twitter resume to ensure that everything is in order first.Twitter is accessible from any computer with Internet access. If you want to monitor your Twitter resume on the go, Twitter is a standard feature on most tablets and smartphones and you can also tweet from a feature phone using Twitter SMS. No matter how you choose to tweet your resume, remember the tips above and get your message out there.Aziza Ahad Furbert is the Marketing Executive at Digicel Bermuda. www.digicelbermuda.com
