Back to the future: Polaroid camera gets a digital update

Instagram cam: Concept pictures suggest that the Socialmatic Camera will look like the Instagram app icon and will allow users to take Instagram-like photos and print them on the spot.

If you’re still mourning the death of the Polaroid camera, I’ve got great news for you. Your favourite bit of retro technology is being reinvented for 2014.Capitalising on the popularity of Instagram, a company called Socialmatic is currently developing the first Instagram photo camera with some amazing features — some new, and some old school. The Italian design firm is taking Instagram out of the digital space and putting it into your hands in the form of an actual camera that takes (and prints!) postcard-sized photographs.Last year, the web-enabled instant camera was but a concept. Now, an agreement between the designer and Polaroid may make the camera a reality. The Socialmatic camera, which will bear the Polaroid brand, is expected to hit the market in the first quarter of 2014.“It’s been a long and difficult negotiation,” inventor and Socialmatic CEO Antonio De Rosa said, adding, “this mix of hardware and software, together with our brand new photo social network will fill the gap between virtuality and reality.”The Socialmatic camera will allows users to point, snap and apply one of Instagram's retro filters to get various artistic effects and share to Facebook and Instagram right from the camera. Or, instead of sharing virtually, users can print it directly onto sticky-backed sheets thanks to an internal printer in the camera. Each printed photo will show your Instagram nickname and a QR code, which will allow fellow Instagrammers to scan and find you on the social network. Users can also print captions on the front of the photo. The device will have a built-in Zink (zero ink) printer, Wi-Fi and the ability to sync photos to one's Instagram and Facebook accounts.Other features include:— 16 MB mass storage— 4 inch wide touch-screen— 2 main lenses, one for main capture, a second for 3D filters— Webcam applications and QR Code capturing— Optical zoom— LED Flash— Internal printer and paper cartridge with dedicated 4 colour in tanksConcept photos of the prototype show a slim, square camera that resembles the Instagram app icon. But the company says product design details were still being finalised and the look could change.Socialmatic’s licensing deal with Polaroid will also include accessories such as camera bags, lenses and filters, the company said. The Instagram app launched in 2010, allowing users to post retro filters to their smartphone photos before sharing them on social media. Instagram was then acquired last year for $1 billion.Despite being centred around Instagram, Socialmatic has no affiliation with the social photo app. With Socialmatic piggybacking on Instagram’s massive popularity and even adopting the same look as the app’s logo, it remains to be seen if any legal problems pop up.As for how much a retro-ish toy like this will set you back, the company says the release date is still too far out to make a guess on Socialmatic’s pricetag. Previous estimates given by the company were around $350.It’s a quirky and zany idea, but I kind of like it. After all, the Socialmatic sounds like it’s going to do everything your iPhone or Android can do, minus the printing. For Polaroid enthusiasts, it hints at nostalgia while still being current and digital. For Instagram fans, it’s instant gratification for their art. And, for tech-geeks, it’s just pure fun.And for those of you wondering if you’ll still have to shake it like a Polaroid picture, the answer is no. No shaking necessary.
