Tech Today: Make your snaps stand out with A Beautiful Mess app
A clever new app launched a couple of weeks ago will soon have amateur photographers everywhere doodling all over their photos and sharing them with the world on Facebook and Instagram.
The app called ‘A Beautiful Mess’ and it lets you beautify and customise your photos with fun and stylistic filters, borders, overlays and fonts, then share your work with social networks.
First, you choose a picture from your photo library that you want to make prettier. After scaling and cropping it, you can choose from six different filters and 16 different borders that can be changed to a choice of five different colours you can even layer the borders on top of one another. Then you can label or caption your photo with a choice of four different fonts. Just type out the text, then move it, resize it or change the colour and lay it over your photo with your finger.
You can also doodle over your image with 28 pre-drawn doodle designs from the creators or add on fun phrases like hello, yum!, enjoy and lovely 12 to choose from in all. Just resize and choose the colour for your phrases or doodles and move them over your photo.
You can use the app to spice up your existing photos or you can choose from one of the 12 background images the app’s creators have designed to serve as a canvas for notes and doodles. Additional packs of 12 geometric and 12 mod backgrounds can be purchased for 99 cents per pack.
You can also purchase additional packs of eight dainty borders, five minimalist borders and eight sketchbook borders for 99 cents a pack. Seven additional fonts, 25 different doodles, 24 more word bubbles and 12 beautifully handwritten phrases can also be purchased for 99 cents per pack.
While the app costs just 99 cents to download, the in-app purchases for extras add up fast bringing the total cost to almost $11 for the app with all its available features. Right now, the app is available only for the iPhone, but its creators say the Android version is coming very soon. The app is also pretty packed with features, which means you’ll want to be connected to Wi-Fi while you’re using it, so it doesn’t eat up your data plan.
‘A Beautiful Mess’ was released by a pair of lifestyle bloggers on May 14 and already it has racked up more than 96,000 photos shared via Instagram under the hashtags #AbeautifulMess and #ABMapp. Before the bloggers had a chance to even blog about it, the app shot to number one on the iTunes chart. The ‘A Beautiful Mess’ app is now sitting at number seven on the iTunes chart at the time of writing.
A Beautiful Mess (www.abeautifulmess.com) is a lifestyle blog run by a two 20-something sisters in Springfield, Missouri. Bloggers Elsie and Emma write about photography, crafts, recipes, décor, fashion and beauty. They’ve got multiple book deals and own a vintage shop/bakery called Red Velvet. Like many savvy lifestyle bloggers, they live a Pinterest-perfect life, sharing beautifully photographed recipes, impeccably done DIY projects and tasteful design inspiration. Their site reaches 1.5 million monthly unique users because they are very, very good at what they do.
Their app, which will no doubt appeal to people who share these types of interest, follows the same aesthetic as their blog whimsical, pretty and girly and lets users and fans of the site to what they do, without extensive design or Photoshop training.
The app’s motto on iTunes reads, “Your life is beautiful. Your photos should be, too”. While apps that add text to photos are nothing new, an app that does plus adds borders and other fun things is novel. There’s no denying this app is a great way to make your snaps stand out in a world inundated by photo sharing. It certainly does put the “beautiful” in ‘A Beautiful Mess’.
