Digicel raises internet rates

Digicel internet subscribers have been given a month’s notice of an impending price hike for the service, in a message from the company.

And Liam Donnelly, Digicel Bermuda chief executive officer, conceded that what subscribers will see as unwelcomed news, is that the company will build in continuing, automatic annual price increases.

The company blames the current global economic climate for creating a challenging business environment.

The letter states: “As you may be aware inflation has been on the rise globally, and unfortunately, this has had an impact on our costs.

“Despite our best efforts to absorb these costs, we have reached a point where we can no longer do so, without compromising the quality of our service.”

The letter does not indicate the specific bump in pricing for the June increase, or if it too, will be linked to a measure of the Consumer Price Index.

Nor does it say if the yearly increases will follow from June, or be implemented at some other time of the year.

It said: “As a result of these higher costs, we will be increasing our Digicel + prices starting from June 1, 2023.

“Furthermore, we want to be transparent about our pricing strategy going forward to continue to deliver top-quality service and invest in our infrastructure.

“We have made a decision to increase prices annually based on government inflation. We understand that this may be unwelcome news, but we believe that it is essential to maintain the best level of service possible at Digicel.”

Digicel said it remains committed to Bermuda’s digital future by delivering simply more speed, reliability, and connectivity.

The company said: “The price change will help us continue investing in our network, infrastructure and team, ensuring that we can provide the world-class service you deserve.

“We appreciate your understanding and continued support as we navigate these challenging times.”

Rising internet charges are not uncommon in 2023. In the UK, some subscribers have seen their bills rise by as much as 15 per cent.

The spring time rate hikes have been comprised of the CPI rate plus an additional three to five per cent.
