Ricky Mallory is back in charge of the Bermuda Davis Cup team.

Mallory, the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association national tennis director, has resumed the captaincy from Steve Bean ahead of competition in Americas group three in Costa Rica next month.

Bermuda will compete against Aruba, Bolivia, Honduras, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Venezuela and Costa Rica in San Jose from June 11 to 14, with the eight teams split into two pools.

There is only one change to the team that competed for the island last year, with Trey Mallory, Daniel Phillips, No 1 Tariq Simons and Jack Keyes taking part. James Finnigan could not travel as he is recovering from a dislocated shoulder.

Jenson Bascome, a former Bermuda Davis Cup player, is also on the trip and is expected to provide crucial support both on and off the court as the team's physiotherapist.

Bermuda finished fourth in Pool B last year before finishing sixth overall when the action took place in Asunción, Paraguay.

“I’m honoured and delighted to return as captain and coach of the Davis Cup team,” Mallory said.

“Last year, I travelled in the role of national tennis director, while Steve Bean admirably stepped in as acting captain. Steve and I have known each other for many years and we’ve built a strong working relationship.

“Having multiple coaches involved allows for the exchange of diverse ideas and perspectives, which is always beneficial for the team.

“This year, Steve will again be part of the travelling contingent, and we will collaborate closely in discussing team selection as well as strategies ahead of each fixture.

“Group three will once again present a significant challenge but from a coaching standpoint I have complete confidence in our players’ abilities.

“While we’ll be facing opponents with higher individual rankings, I believe that with determination and self-belief, we can overcome any obstacle.”

Michael Wolfe, the BLTA president, is expecting an unforgettable tournament at Costa Rica Country Club.

“This year's Davis Cup promises to be another memorable week of high-stakes tennis, presenting a rigorous yet invaluable test for the Bermuda team,” Wolfe said.

“The entire executive committee and membership of the BLTA extend their heartfelt wishes for immense success to the team throughout this challenging and exciting campaign.

“The team is scheduled to depart Bermuda on June 5, allowing ample time for acclimatisation and final preparations before the rigorous competition commences.

“The BLTA remains confident in the team's ability to rise to the occasion, embody the spirit of Bermudian sportsmanship, and deliver a performance that makes the island proud.

Mallory and Phillips, who are training at Mouratoglou Tennis Academy in Florida before meeting the rest of the team in Miami next week, are coming off successful seasons with their respective American universities.

Mallory was part of the University of North Carolina Wilmington team that won the Coastal Athletic Association Championship this month, beating Elon in the finals for the fourth straight season to win a fifth title in a row.

Phillips has just completed a season on scholarship at Arizona State University. His team was eliminated by University of Southern California in the first round of the National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament.
