A chance to qualify for the Davis Cup Americas group two play-offs is on the cards for Bermuda when they meet Jamaica on the final day of the group three action in Costa Rica on Saturday.

Ricky Mallory’s side finished second to Bolivia in pool A and go up against the Jamaicans, the runners-up from pool B. The Bolivians beat Bermuda 3-0 on Friday night to secure top spot and automatic promotion.

Should Bermuda triumph on the final day of action in San Jose, they will qualify for the promotional play-offs in February next year. Since making their Davis Cup debut in 1995, Bermuda have been competing in group three and four, experiencing both promotion and relegation between the two groups.

Daniel Phillips, 20, the youngest member of the team who was instrumental in the wins over the host nation and Aruba together with Trey Mallory, hailed the team’s fighting spirit.

“This is honestly the best the country has ever played in the Davis Cup,” the Arizona State University student told The Royal Gazette.

“It’s the first time that we've qualified for the promotional round in group three. Honestly, it’s an honour to be a part of this, we just want to keep it going.

“We’ve shown against Costa Rica and Aruba that we don’t give up. We won’t quit and we’re in it for the long haul.

“The team has been supportive on and off the court. They've been giving me the same energy that I bring to every match.

“Coach Ricky has done a great job of sticking with me throughout the match, knowing it’s not over until it's over. He’s reminded me who I am – that I’m a warrior – and that’s honestly helped me go through the motions.”

Tre Mallory, thanked the supporters for coming out to give the players the extra motivation.

“First of all I would to say it’s an honour to represent Bermuda,’’ the 23-year-old said.

“I just want to say thank you to all the supporters who came to watch us. It feels like we’re one big family.

“The supporters who came really helped me. In the singles, I had a close one against Jesse Flores of Costa Rica, I honestly think it could have gone either way.

“Daniel and I played really good doubles, probably the best doubles we've ever played to be honest. I hope we’re making the country proud.”

Tariq Simons, who got his chance in the singles and doubles against Bolivia, described the atmosphere in the Bermuda camp.

“It’s really a privilege to represent Bermuda,” the island’s No 1 singles player said.

“It’s an unbelievable experience and success for the island so far. We’re really representing as best as we can and it’s proving good enough to defeat the better countries in the region.”
