Daniel Phillips gains insight into life as professional
Daniel Phillips has spoken on the important lessons he is learning after playing in ITF Futures tournaments.
The Bermudian is in Monastir, Tunisia, where he was knocked out in the second round of an ITF M15 tournament after losing 7-5, 6-1 to American Cooper Williams on Thursday.
Before heading to Tunisia, Bermuda’s Davis Cup star played two tournaments in Turkey, where he picked up his first wins as a professional.
“I’m getting a whole lot of matches and experience on this tour,” the 20-year-old told The Royal Gazette.
“It’s helping my game develop and get stronger. I’m seeing myself getting better mentally and physically on the court.”
Reflecting on his second-round loss to Williams, Phillips felt that his opponent took advantage of his mental fatigue.
“I had a tough one and lost in the second round to Cooper Williams, who had won the two previous tournaments,” he said.
“I think overall it was a high-quality battle. I played pretty good in the first set, it was back and forth long rallies and not a whole lot of free points given from each other.
“In the second set my body was a little banged up. I was tired mentally and he capitalised on that. For me to get to the second round in my first week in Tunisia, I’m just grateful for that. I’m happy to get another ATP point as I progress on this professional path.”
Phillips is staying put in Tunisia where he is playing two more tournaments.
“I’m going to rest the body, heal and acclimatise for next week,” he added.
“This is part of my journey, where I have to travel for tournaments at this level. I’ve been playing international tennis since I was eight but all that has changed is the type of tournaments I’m playing in now.”
