Bermuda teams finished outside the qualifying slots for the Central American and Caribbean Games at the Pan American Squash Championships in Rio de Janeiro

A 2-0 loss to El Salvador in the round of 32 saw the men’s aspirations come to an end in Brazil on Saturday, while on Sunday the women’s side lost 2-0 to the United States. The next day, they squared off with Cayman Islands in a separate draw as part of the CAC Games qualification process, but went down by a similar scoreline.

“The team portion of the Pan American Squash Championships has been completed,” said Micah Franklin, the Bermuda Squash Association head of squash.

“Unfortunately, neither the men or the women’s team qualified for the CAC Games. The men got put in a difficult draw against El Salvador, who look like they are going to be the winners of our bracket.

“The women always had a great challenge to qualify against the likes of the United States and a tough Cayman Islands, which they could have won.

“We’ve also had some unfortunate injuries. Taylor Carrick took a bad blow to the elbow in the team match against El Salvador. He ended up going to hospital and got an X-ray to check if there was a fracture, but thankfully it’s not.

“Sydney Wallace also got sick and missed two matches. She’s now trying to get back into it for the doubles.”

Three Bermudian teams were eliminated from the doubles on Tuesday. Anaya Smith and Abigail Brewer were beaten 11-5, 11-3 by Diego Elías and Luciana Castillo, from Peru, in the mixed doubles round of 16.

Rachel Barnes and Wallace got knocked out of the women’s doubles round of 16. The two were bested 11-7, 11-2, by the Paraguay duo of Lujan Palacios and Fiorella Gatti.

Franklin and Noah Browne exited the men’s doubles at the round of 16. The duo went down 11-9, 11-3, to the Paraguay pair of Francesco Marcantonio and Damian Casarino.

All hope is not lost for Bermuda as they have another chance to qualify for the CAC Games when they compete at the Senior Caribbean Squash Championships, which take place in Kingston, Jamaica, from November 24 to 28.
