Bermuda’s Davis Cup team left for Cyprus last night for the World Group II play-off against Georgia, scheduled for next Friday and Saturday.

Seven members of the delegation, players Trey Mallory, Wayne Montgomery and Zachary McGuire, captain Ricky Mallory, physiotherapist Jenson Bascome, team manager Steve Bean and assistant team manager Lionel Bartley are due to arrive in Cyprus today.

The team will have four days of preparations before taking on Georgia on neutral turf at Herodotou Tennis Academy, a hard court facility in Larnaca. Daniel Phillips, who is representing Tulane University in college tennis, will link up with his team-mates the day before the start of the action.

Victory over Georgia in the best-of-five match format guarantees Bermuda promotion to the World Group II. Should things not go their way, the island’s tennis players would be heading back to the Americas group three.

Commenting on the preparations for what is Bermuda’s biggest test in the premier international team competition, Ricky Mallory stated that the sessions had intensified in the final weeks.

“In the lead up to our Davis Cup tie in Cyprus, training has been very intense, with both Zach and Wayne putting in the hard work required,” Mallory told The Royal Gazette.

“The players have logged many hours focused on repetitive groundstroke drills, along with occasional individual sessions tailored to specific areas they needed to improve.

“The training sessions have also included a strong emphasis on tennis specific fitness, which is essential.

“Daniel is receiving the necessary training through his school programme, while Trey returned on Monday after completing his training block in Boca Raton.”

Trey Mallory outlined what he has been doing since he graduated from University of North Carolina Wilmington last year.

“I’m very excited and can’t wait to get out on the court once we land in Cyprus,” he said.

“After graduation in May I went to Mouratoglou Tennis Academy in Zephyrhills, Florida, where I trained for the Davis Cup in Costa Rica.

“After our performance in Costa Rica, I played in the INTENNSE Pro League held in Atlanta between June and July.

“From there I went to Boca to train in preparation for this Davis Cup tie in Cyprus against Georgia.”

Meanwhile, Michael Wolfe, the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association president, has expressed his appreciation to all those who contributed to make sure the team’s trip is a success.

“On behalf of the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association, I would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the many sponsors and donors whose incredible generosity has made our 2026 Davis Cup campaign possible,” said Wolfe.

“The support we have received from the community has been truly overwhelming, and we sincerely appreciate the dedication shown by the Government of Bermuda, our corporate partners and private individuals who have stepped up to champion our athletes.

“Your belief in our team is the foundation of our success. We thank you for standing with us as we represent the island on the global stage.”
