Wayne Montgomery to make Davis Cup debut against Georgia
Wayne Montgomery will make his first Davis Cup appearance for Bermuda in the World Cup II play-off against Georgia in Cyprus on Friday.
The South African-born player is due to square off with the world No 271 Saba Purtseladze in the second singles match on day one after Daniel Phillips takes on Aleksandre Bakshi in the opening encounter at Herodotou Tennis Academy.
Phillips will combining forces with Trey Mallory to take on Zura Tkemaladze and Aleksandre Metreveli in the doubles on Saturday before the final two singles matches, which features Phillips scheduled to engage Purtseladze and Montgomery facing Bakshi.
“It’s been an amazing week, arriving in Cyprus after travelling for about 24 hours,” Montgomery told The Royal Gazette.
“Training has been great this past week and the team is healthy, focused and motivated to get the job done against Georgia.
“This is the first time in Bermuda's history that the men’s tennis team have qualified for the Davis Cup World Group II play-offs. We are all very excited and privileged to be in this position and we welcome the challenge.”
Trey Mallory, who has been playing for Bermuda since 2018, feels privileged to fly the Bermuda flag in Larnaca and welcomed the inclusion of Montgomery and Zachary McGuire in the squad.
“It’s a true honour to represent Bermuda once again in the Davis Cup, especially in this crucial World Group II tie against Georgia,” he said.
“The team has been working hard over the past few days here in Cyprus and that preparation has brought us closer and sharper as a unit.
“The addition of Wayne has added a new dynamic to the team and having Zach, our top local junior player, brings fresh energy and belief. We will all be ready to battle on Friday.”
McGuire, the youngest member of the team, is enjoying his first senior tour.
“It’s been a great week so far,” the 17-year-old said.
“Lots of training and we’ve had great preparation for the tie this weekend. The weather’s been great for us and it’s been a great experience for me so far.
“I had a practice match with one of the Georgian players and it was great to get a little taste of the level out here.
“We’re all super excited for this opportunity to remain in World Group II, I think we’re in a great spot and it should be an exciting weekend of matches.”
Team captain Ricky Mallory has challenged his players to put up a fight over the next two days.
“I set a very high standard for my players and ask them to give everything they have every time they step on the court,” Mallory said.
“Staying in World Group II is a must for us and while the challenge ahead is significant, it’s one we are fully capable of meeting.
“I believe in this group and in what our players can do when they compete with heart, discipline and belief. On any given day, if we commit and fight for every point, anything is possible.”
