Tariq Simons and Shelby Madeiros were the standout players at the Deloitte Open Tennis Championships last week.

Simons won the men’s open singles and formed part of the winning team in the men’s doubles, while he was knocked out in the semi-finals in the mixed doubles at Pomander Gate Tennis and Pickleball Club.

One of Bermuda’s top players, Simons is hoping to be selected for the Bermuda squad to take on Mexico in the Davis Cup on home soil in September and he has done his chances no harm by beating one of his main rivals for a spot on the team.

Simons beat Zachary McGuire 7-6, 7-5 in a tight final to be crowned men’s singles champions and teamed up with Scott Redmond to beat David Thomas and Christopher Weeks 2-6, 6-4, 10-6 in another epic encounter.

But his quest for a treble in the mixed doubles alongside Ella Metschnabel was thwarted with a 2-6, 3-6 defeat in the semi-final to Evan Heyliger and Shelby Madeiros, who were beaten in the final by Sam Butler and Ashley Brooks.

Madeiros was the woman to beat throughout the tournament after winning the women’s singles title with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Chloe McBrearty in the final. The two singles finalists then teamed up to win the women’s doubles by beating Cayla Cross and Zaire Simmons 6-0, 6-2 in the final.

Chase McCrimmon beat Cyre Trott in three sets to win the Men’s B Division, with Isabella Neururer winning the female equivalent.

In the over-45 age groups, Jensen Bascome beat Michael Toyer in the final of the men’s competition, with Shonette Wilson defeating Sameera Hasan in the women’s division.

There was a titanic struggle in the men’s over-60s final with Kendall Cuffy prevailing 10-7 in the tiebreaker to beat Wilfred Gonsalves.

In the women’s doubles 45+ category, Shonette and Josephine Wilson won the title after finishing the round-robin competition unbeaten. Hasan and Numair Khan beat Jaire Lawrence-Salaam and Darren Woods in the Men’s Doubles B competition.
