Minister seeks public input on proposals to widen channels

Government has called Town Hall meetings, for the public to have their say on alterations proposed for Bermuda’s shipping channels.Transport Minister Terry Lister said no decisions have yet been made on Government’s recently-commissioned study of the North Channel and Town Cut.Both waterways must be altered, if the bigger-sized vessels popular in today’s cruise market are to access harbours at Hamilton and St George’s.The Minister said there was little doubt both ports had taken an economic hit from the loss of smaller cruise ships.“The purpose of the Town Hall meetings is to get input from the public into this important part of Bermuda’s economy,” Mr Lister said. The public can view options given in the study for half an hour prior to the meetings, which will be presented by the Minister and staff.A meeting on Tuesday, October 11, at St James Church Hall in Sandys, opens at 7pm, with the presentation at 7.30pm.An October 12 meeting in the Anglican Cathedral church hall will open at 6pm, and a Penno’s Wharf, St George’s meeting on October 13 opens at 7pm.Mr Lister said: “Once we receive input from the public and other stakeholder groups, we will decide how best to proceed.”
