Minister on song for Red Sox fans

The Minister of Business Development and Tourism, the Hon. Wayne Furbert joined local singers Tricray Astwood and Steve Easton in singing the US National Anthem at last eveningís Boston Red Sox game.

It was chilly under the bright lights at Boston’s Fenway Park — but singing the US national anthem there was “terrific” and “one of the greatest feelings of my singing career”, Tourism Minister Wayne Furbert said.A seasoned gospel singer from the age of 14, Mr Furbert told The Royal Gazette: “It’s always been my desire to sing at a large stadium.”Last night he got his wish, in front of nearly 40,000 baseball fans.A tradition before US sports events, ‘The Star Spangled Banner’ has a reputation as a challenging piece of music.“Everybody knows parts of it,” Mr Furbert said, “but you can’t mess up in front of America.”Even after memorising its lyrics while “making my bed and driving my car”, the Minister confessed to moments of stage fright.“Even while I was singing my solo,” he recalled, “I was saying to myself, don’t mess up.”Mr Furbert reportedly represented Bermuda without a hitch, alongside his cousin Tricray Astwood, and singer Steve Easton, while Gombey leader Shawn Caisey of the H and H troupe got the opening pitch of the game.Elated by the crowd’s response, Bermuda’s team were on hand as part of an ongoing “Bermuda Day” tourism promo with Fenway natives the Boston Red Sox.The evening’s 54F temperatures also presented challenges: after standing for about 45 minutes in short sleeves, Mr Furbert confessed: “I’m freezing my arms off.”Expecting to be back on the Island today, Mr Furbert joked of the performance: “I’m expecting a few contracts to come my way.”The tourism promotion tour continues, with stadium advertising and Gombey-armed “guerrilla advertising” for the East Coat market.
