US TV viewers see Hamilton Harbour live during morning show

Millions of viewers across the United States got a glimpse of Bermuda on a network television morning programme yesterday. After months of preparation, a live shot of Hamilton Harbour was beamed across 150 CBS stations carrying its ‘This Morning’ programme.“The shot was about 20 seconds. It depicted Hamilton Habour looking west with the various small islands and had a portion of the Fairmont Princess Hotel pool, flags, palm trees and of course the water in the back ground,” said Rick Richardson, CEO of Bermuda Broadcasting Company which partnered with the Tourism Department for the promotion.A title graphic read “Hamilton Bermuda”.Mr Richardson said that both CBS and BBC considered that the live shot had gone extremely well.It is expected that CBS ‘This Morning’ will pick up a live shot from Bermuda on a regular basis.“The live shot only brings greater attention and focus on Bermuda. It will now be used in rotation going to and from news segments in ‘CBS This Morning’,” said Mr Richardson.Tourism Minister Wayne Furbert announced the promotion as a partnership with Bermuda Broadcasting Company in March. He said then that the Island would benefit from unlimited publicity, with $350,000 paid to local CBS and ABC affiliate Bermuda Broadcasting Company Limited as part of the deal. But BBC has now managed to secure alternative sponsors and the taxpayer is paying “virtually nothing” according to Mr Richardson.Mr Furbert is off the Island and could not be reached for comment last night.
