Bermuda’s Blue Flag Ambassadors were honoured recently by the Department of Tourism for their service to the Island. The Department hosted a reception at the Coco Reef Hotel to thank the ambassadors, and note 40 recent graduates of the programme.Of the 220 certified Blue Flag Ambassadors, 160 attended the event and received a newly designed Blue Flag pin and a photo identification badge that can help the ambassadors stand out in the future.Tourism Minister Shawn Crockwell described the reception as a great event, saying: “These are the people who promote Bermuda directly to our visitors and it is important we recognise and thank them for the important work they do.”The Blue Flag Ambassador Course has been at the centre of tour guide training and certification for taxi operators since the 1960s.Over the years the programme has extended beyond training taxi operators and begun working with those in other aspects of the hospitality industry.Along with teaching participants about interesting historical, social and environmental aspects of Bermuda, the course has recently added an increased focus on the Bermuda Tourism Plan and the Island’s five destination hubs.
