MacLean is confident gaming will be allowed
Lead developer for the Hamilton waterfront redevelopment project, Michael MacLean, is confident that Bermuda will legalise gaming in the near future. He confirmed that his proposal for a redeveloped waterfront includes building a casino hotel on White’s Island as reported in this newspaper on Friday. But Mr MacLean will have to negotiate with the Government to develop White’s Island.A Government spokesperson said yesterday that White’s Island is not under the control of the Corporation of Hamilton. Mr MacLean explained that he was under a different impression when his proposal to the Corporation was crafted as White’s Island is included in the City Plan. But he confirmed that White’s Island is not included in his 262-year lease with City Hall.Mr MacLean is confident Government will come to an agreement with him over the property because it is only receiving a nominal rent for it and the casino concept could generate millions for the national coffers.White’s Island is currently on a 20-year lease to Leroy Bean for a youth programme.Asked why he would include the casino concept when gaming is currently illegal, Mr MacLean said it was clear that the current and former administrations were minded to introduce gaming either through direct legislation or via a referendum.“It’s clearly there and there’s an opportunity for a developer to easily raise capital. So why wouldn’t you suggest it?” he said.“I’m confident that it’s going to be a reality and I’ve told the financiers that.”Mr MacLean added: “The ideas have to come from the private sector and the private sector needs to put pressure on the Government to legislate things to make doing business in Bermuda friendlier. And if they don’t, we’re going to starve.”Mr MacLean’s proposal envisions a $257 million luxury casino hotel and residences on White’s Island as a signature feature of the waterfront project. The facility would also include a marina with multi berthing facilities and a water taxi service.
