Club Med shortlist to be drawn up

A number of developers interested in taking on the eyesore site of the former Club Med in St George’s have submitted proposals, it was announced yesterday.

Now Government will draw up a shortlist before picking a developer from the site.

A Government spokesman said: “Proposals have been received and will be analysed and a shortlist of suitably qualified applicants compiled.”

He added that Tourism and Transport Minister Shawn Crockwell would make a public statement on progress.

The deadline for proposals for the site was on Monday after a January request for proposals.

The announcement said Government was looking for “a hight quality tourism development consistent with the historical and natural significance of the area.”

It added: “The proposal should complement the St George’s UNESCO heritage site designation while providing economic opportunities for the people of St George’s and Bermuda.”

The Club Med resort shut up shop in 1988 and the buildings were torn down 20 years later.

US businessman Carl Bazarian was signed up to develop a Park Hyatt resort on the site — but the development agreement was later scrapped because of contract breaches.

Government repealed the Act of Parliament granting the developer a 262-year lease on the site last September, opening up the way for new developers to come forward.
