Ferries to run with a quarter of capacity

A reduced ferry service with “limited passenger capacity” will start on Monday, May 11, the Department of Marine and Ports Service said today.

In a press release, a Government spokesman explained: “In an effort to provide adequate physical distancing when travelling on public ferries, alternate seating arrangements are necessary.

“As a result, the available seating will be limited to 25 per cent of normal capacity when services resume with no standing allowed.

“This will generally amount to a maximum of 50 passengers.

“When boarding, a ferry boat crew member will provide hand sanitiser and announce when the seating capacity has been reached.”

Passengers were reminded to wear face masks when using any public transport service. Anyone without a mask will be refused permission to board.

The spokesman said: “The public are also advised to only travel for essential purposes and never if you are unwell, coughing, or sneezing.

“Now is not the time for leisurely bus or ferry rides so stay at home as much as possible.”

He added that the a temporary ferry timetable will start on Monday and run “until further notice”.

The spokesman added: “In light of the schedule changes and reduced service levels, the Department of Marine and Ports Services apologises for any inconvenience and thanks the public for their patience, co-operation, understanding and continued practice of physical distancing to keep Bermuda safe from the spread of Covid-19.”
