Historical re-enactors joined forces to mark the 412th anniversary of the Sea Venture Landing Day on Wednesday.

The St. George’s/Lyme Regis Twinning Association held Sea Venture Landing Day marking the July 28 Sea Venture shipwreck off Gates’ Bay.

The historical re-enactment began with a gig representing the Sea Venture long boat coming ashore, followed by a re-enactment of the survivors’ arrival. There was a service of thanksgiving with a distribution of flowers to the sea.

The event was organised by the members of the St. George’s/Lyme Regis Twinning Association in conjunction with the St. Regis Bermuda Resort.

The wreck of the Sea Venture marks the beginning of human habitation of Bermuda. Although the passengers and crew sailed to Virginia on ships they built in Bermuda, they left two people behind and from that time until the official settlement of Bermuda in 1612, there were always people living on the island.
