Smith jumps to victory in Atlanta

Bermuda long jumper Tyrone Smith

Tyrone Smith “busted off the rust” after winning the men’s long jump at the American Track League Series in Atlanta at the Life University last weekend.Smith, competing for the first time since emerging from Covid-19 lockdown, posted a winning jump of 7.66 metres, which also saw him claim the honours in the men’s 35-38 age group. He was gearing up for the Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer before it was postponed because of Covid-19.“I’ve been here for years! Busted off all the rust yesterday at the @americantrackleague series in Atlanta,” Smith wrote on Facebook.“No I didn’t mark anything close to what I know I’m in shape for [7.66m] but I got a nice win and I’m highly encouraged by some of the good things I did after training mostly by myself almost entirely since last July. “I felt fast and I haven’t had this much pop off the board since 2017. The first jump is a nice foul from the first round and the last jump ... a terrible 7.31m but from 70cm behind the foul with a huge reaching last step. Good take off placement and on the board and I’d estimate around 8.10 which is where I’d expect to be right now. “I’ll be back at it in a couple weeks and we’ll see what we can do!!”
