Sprint trio's track challenge

A trio of former track greats will be dusting off the cobwebs when they race against each other as part of a fundraiser for Bermuda's 2012 Carifta Games preparations.

National record holders Troy Douglas, Brian Wellman and Devon Bean will make their track return in a 40 metre Sprint Challenge at the National Sports Centre (NSC) next Saturday (December 4) at 7.15 p.m.

One of the top sprinters in Bermuda's history, Douglas won the silver medal at the 1995 IAAF World Indoor Championships in the 200 metres and competed at the 1988, 1992 and 1996 Olympics.

He is the only Bermudian athlete to have reached three Olympic semi-finals.

A four-time Olympian, Wellman is the Island's greatest ever triple jumper and won the world indoor championship title in 1995 in Barcelona, Spain.

Bean competed at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and is the national record holder in the 100m.

The Sprint Challenge is the brainchild of Douglas and Wellman although Donna Watson, Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) president, has backed the youngest of the trio, Bean, to win the race.

"This will be the first time in a number of years these guys have raced ... I'm going with Devon," she said. "It's a mini launch and we just want to get the word out that we're starting our preparations."

The event will be held in conjunction with the Bermuda Secondary Sports Federation's (BSSF) football tournament which will also be held at the NSC next Saturday.

The BTFA yesterday unveiled the logo for the 2010 Carifta Games (pictured left).

Bermuda last hosted the event in 2004 which saw current world record holder Usain Bolt, of Jamaica, become the first junior athlete to break 20 seconds in the 200m in a time of 19.93. Bermuda previously hosted the event in 1980 and 1975.

This year's Carifta Games were held in the Cayman Islands where Bermuda's team finished fifth out of 25 nations, winning eleven medals.
