Watson: Carifta Games will happen

Members of Bermuda's 2010 Carifta team show off their medals: Juma Mouchette,Taylor Ashley Bean, Akeila Richardson, Jeneko Place, Bermuda Track and Field Association president Donna Watson, Christian Wright, Shaquille Dill ,and Allison Outerbridge. This year's Carifta Games is in jeopardy.

Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) president Donna Watson is still hopeful this year's Carifta Games will go ahead.Reports from the Caribbean media say the Games is in serious jeopardy of suffering its first ever cancellation because of hosting problems. It is believed several potential hosts including Bahamas, Trinidad and Jamaica have turned down the chance to the stage the region's marquee junior and track and field meet, which is usually held over the Easter weekend.St. Kitts had been meant to host this year's event but opted out of their original commitment.Watson, however, is optimistic the Games will proceed although she admits it may have to be scaled down in size. “I know there has been a lot of information on the web regarding the hosting of Carifta 2011,” she said.“I would like to say that this information is not coming out of our official NACAC office. Please be careful of what is written on the web regarding Carifta as some of it is not entirely true.“The official word on where Carifta 2011 is going to be held or if it is cancelled or if dates are changed will come from our official office and will be immediately passed on to all of the presidents of each association.“It might have to be scaled down or some other provisions made but I'm very positive that it will happen.”Bermuda athletes Kyrah Scraders (1500 metres), Bruce Degrilla (long jump ‘A' standard) and Chas Smith (long jump ‘B' standard), Shaquille Dill (800m) and Karim Creary (400m) have already qualified for this year's Games, and Watson is confident of improving on the 11 medals the Island won last year.“Kyrah has run a time of 5:07.82 in the Under-17 girls which is close to the qualifying standard for the Under-20 women.“Kyrah as you saw in the Front Street Mile has a great future in track and field and if not this year will definitely be one of our medallists at the Carifta Games” said Watson.“I expect for Shaquille to repeat at Carifta this year but instead of the silver bringing home the gold medal.“Karim is running way ahead of the times that he posted at the end of last season and I expect him to be one of our up and coming stars in years to come. He might be a surprise medalist.”Watson believes it is only a matter of time before several other young local athletes reach the Carifta qualifying mark in their respective events. She said: “There are several athletes who have not competed in any of the (qualifying) events yet such as Jeneko Place who I've no doubt will qualify.“I expect with better weather at the up and coming track meets (our athletes) will easily reach the standards.”Bermuda will host next year's Carifta Games. The Island last staged the event in 2004 which saw current world record holder Usain Bolt, of Jamaica, become the first junior athlete to break 20 seconds in the 200m in a time of 19.93.Last year's Games were held in the Cayman Islands where Bermuda's team finished fifth out of 25 nations.Bermuda's Henry Stevens-Carty took part in the Blue Raider Invitational Indoor track meet last weekend and placed third in the mile with a time of 4:22.13.

Home soil: Bermuda's 2004 Carifta Games team celebrate their medals the last time the Island hosted the Games. Bermuda is due to host the Games again next year, but the Games are in serious jeopardy this year.
Jamaica's Usain Bolt dominated the 2004 Carifta Games in Bermuda, and has gone on to dominate world athletics.
