Clarke and Douglas qualify for Carifta

Two more Bermuda athletes qualified for the Carifta Games at the weekend.Victoria Clarke met the qualifying standard in the under-17 100 metre girls event in a time of 12.37 seconds, while Quassie Douglas ran the girls under-17 1500m in a time of 5:16.98.Jeneko Place, competing in his first meet of the season, missed out on the qualifying standard in the 100m by a couple of seconds. His time was 10.94.Seven athletes have qualified for this year’s Carifta Games so far. They are Henry Stevens-Carty (under-20 boys 800m), Shaquille Dill (under-20 boys 800m), Kyrah Scraders (under-17 girls 800m and 1500m), Quassie Douglas (under-17 girls 1500m), Bruce Degrilla (under-17 boys long jump), Chas Smith (under-17 boys long jump), Karim Creary (under-17 boys 400m).Jamaica will host this year’s annual Carifta Games the region’s marquee junior track and field meet. It will he held at the Montego Bay Sports Complex from April 23-25.Next year will see Bermuda host the Games. The Island last staged the event in 2004 which saw current world record holder Usain Bolt, of Jamaica, become the first junior athlete to break 20 seconds in the 200m in a time of 19.93. Last year’s Carifta Games were held in the Cayman Islands where Bermuda’s team finished fifth out of 25 nations.
