Smith wins gold in Japan

Tyrone Smith was agonisingly close to qualifying for the World Championships this weekend.The Bermuda long jumper took gold at the Kawasaki World Challenge Meet with a leap of 8.09metres, just one centimetre shy of hitting the qualifying standard.“Tyrone has rarely jumped over eight metres this early in the season so this puts him in a good position for some great results heading into the Olympic year,” Donna Watson, the Bermuda Track and Field Association president said.Jasmine Brunson meanwhile has qualified for the Pan Am Games after her leap of 6.16m for Clemson University at the Bob Pollock Spring Invitational.Brunson's jump elevated her to the fifth spot all-time in –Clemson outdoor history for the long jump.Elsewhere Daniel Emery, whose Carifta Games hopes were dashed by bad weather, –finished second in the 100m as the New Albany Eagles won the Hilliard Bradley Invitational.
