New group added to Round the Grounds junior races
A new age category has been added to the KPMG Round the Grounds running race to be held in the Botanical Gardens tomorrow.Youngsters, aged between 16 and 18, will be eligible to run the 2.1 mile course after track officials had commented on the lack of races for this age group in 2010.Last year 210 young runners ran the tough, hilly course that circles the Botanical Gardens with records set by Azaria Robinson, Zakiyyah Showers, Jordan Bascome and Kameron Creighton.Maler runners to watch in this year’s race include Paul Smith, Luke Green and Nakeno Creighton, while in the the girls’ category, Kyrah Scraders, Aaliyah Nolan and Jordan Bascome are all expected to be in the mix.All were top three finishers in the 13-15 age group at this year’s Telford Mile.Other emerging talent seen running at the Telford Mile who will be on show include Aaron Jacobs, Matteo Dill and Rahzir Jones.Jacobs went on to win the Dash at Dark in March.KPMG record breaker Showers also won her 10-12-age category at the Telford Mile followed by Quaashie Douglas and Dash at Dark winner Lynsey Palmer.Other front-runners at these races were Sajan Harvey, Ashley Irby and Emma and Jack Harvey. In both the Dash at Dark this year and the Telford Mile, the top three runners in the 8-9 boys were the same with Sajan Harvey followed by Daniel Ball and Ryan Outerbridge. The races will be timed by Bermuda Timing Systems the same company that compiles results for the May 24 Derby and will be started in waves so that they move swiftly without delays between age groups.Four and five year olds will run 400 metres and six and seven year olds will run 700 metres.Runners aged eight to 12 will compete over one mile and the 13 to18 year-olds over 2.1 miles.Age groups are determined by age on race day.Gift certificates will be awarded to the top three finishers in each age category.Number and chip pick up begins at 12 pm, with the first race starting at 1 pm.Online entry deadline is 12 pm today. For further information, contact race director Laura Keyes at laurak[AT]northrock.bm.
