Smith third in African meet

Long jumper Tyrone Smith fnished third at the IAAF World Challenge meeting in Dakar, Senegal, at the weekend.Smith’s best leap of 7.79 metres came on his second attempt.Meanwhile, Shianne Smith and Andrea Jackson both competed in the NACAC Combined Events in Kingston, Jamaica, also at the weekend, with mixed results.Smith placed 10th overall with 4807 points out of 16 athletes with her best performance on the second day where she moved from 13th place to 10th.Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) president, Donna Watson said: “This was good for Shianne as this was her first full heptathlon for the season and she had a slight hamstring injury going into the event. Andrea unfortunately was unable to complete the event and I’m not sure if it was due to injury.”Jasmine Brunson qualified for the NCAA Division One championship finals in the long jump after finishing 12th with a leap of 6.04 metres in the qualifiers at the weekend. Her compatriot, Latroya Darrell, did not place in the top 12 long jumpers and misses out on the finals.
