Smith to take on world’s elite

Bermuda’s top long jumper Tyrone Smith will be looking for a podium finish this weekend when he takes on the world’s best at the Prefontaine Classic/Samsung Diamond League meet in Eugene, Oregon.“I am excited to be heading to the meet, this is something I have dreamt about since college,” said Smith.“Once you get selected the agents take care of the financial side of things and so forth, so it is a dream come true for me.“I know what I’m getting myself into, everyone here I have competed against, we all know each other so we know what to expect.“I have been to a few Diamond League events so I am confident in how I will make out.”In a recent meet, Smith agonisingly missed out on qualifying for this summer’s World Championships.Bermuda’s Male Athlete of the Year won gold at the Kawasaki World Challenge in Japan with a leap of 8.09 metres, his second best career jump which was just one centimetre shy of the qualifying standard. He said he was encouraged by the jump, considering it was only his second meet of the year. Now he enters the biggest professional track meet in the United States will big ambitions.Smith has made it clear that he will be looking for a strong performance, and possibly a top three finish if he can peform to his very best. One setback for the talented youngster has been a recent fight with the flu, something he felt in Africa last month and again in Holland a few weeks’ ago. However, the long jumper expects to be fit and ready to shine.“It’s the same usual suspects I will be up against so it will be fun to see how I get along.“People normally call me confident so I expect to be in the running for top honours and hopefully top three.“I’m coming off the flu that started up in Africa and then in Holland so I am just trying to keep everything as normal as possible and see how things work out.”
